Measurement of the phase center of UWB antennas for calibration of ground penetrating radar systems

(in English) The precise knowledge of the antenna phase center is of great importance for the signal processing and ranging using a radar system. This paper proposes an experimental method for locating the apparent phase center of an ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) antenna in time domain. The transmission signal is recorded by moving the receiving antenna step-by-step in the direction to orthogonal the bore-sight direction of the transmitting antenna in the H plane. The position of the apparent phase center, as well as its time delay relative to the antenna feeding point, are estimated from the arrival-time of the transmitted signal by computing the cross-correlation. As examples, a Vivaldi antenna and a bowtie antenna were measured. The estimated phase center positions and time delays were validated using two ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems. The first one is a GPR system with a common source antenna array for pavement inspection. The mean error of the layer thickness estimation was reduced from 1.0 cm (7.8 %) by the conventional antenna delay calibration, to 0.3 cm (2.2 %) by the phase center calibration. The second one is an array GPR system for fast subsurface imaging. An experiment carried out in an anechoic chamber demonstrated that two metal spheres with a diameter of 5 cm and spacing of 20 cm at a distance of 1 m from the system were successfully imaged. We conclude that the proposed method can accurately estimate the phase center location of an UWB antenna and it can be applied to other kinds of UWB antennas.
