Humans react faster against visual motion cue than luminance change

(in English) In the present study, we investigated which of luminance change or motion cue contributes to invoke faster human hand avoiding behavior. Participants were asked to draw back their hand form a stick swinging downward to strike their right hand after dangerous notification by luminance change or motion cue. In the luminance change condition, danger was notified by blinking a red led placed on the tip of the stick. In the motion cue condition, danger was notified by moving the tip of the stick slightly toward participants' hand. The experimental result shows that average time required to start hand avoidance after danger notification is 306ms in the luminance change condition and 230ms in the motion cue condition. This indicates that humans react faster against visual motion cue than luminance change.
