A study on rectenna array configuration for RF energy harvesting taking into account mutual coupling

(in English) A basic study was conducted for the configuration of a rectenna array, such as antenna element and element spacing, with a finite number of elements focusing on its angular pattern of the obtainable DC power in order to efficiently harvest ambient RF energy coming in arbitrary directions. The active element pattern, which are the element patterns taken into account mutual couplings between antenna elements, was used to evaluate the angle characteristics of the rectenna array. To calculate the obtainable DC power, an RF-to-DC conversion efficiency of an actual rectifier having non-linear behavior was assumed. The obtainable DC power patterns were estimated for dipole and loop elements with different element spacings. As a result, the mutual couplings considerably affect the DC power pattern for both types of element.
