The real-time mastication measurement using Optical Flow techniques

(in English) The reason of decayed caries tooth, periodontal disease and temporomandibular joint disorder is usually declared for reducing of frequency of chewing during meals. People usually do not chew well when eating and the problem is that they didn’t sense the situation. We therefore tried to develop a system which includes the face detection, region extraction of facial organs, mastication detection and the output of mastication waveform. The system is based on the processing on the images captured by web camera. Firstly the face detection was carried out by the OpenCV library and then specified the nose and mouse surrounding area based on the coordinate of the detected face region. Concerning the mastication detection, we created the nose region image and mouth and jaw region image, and did the edge extraction on them. We focused on that there is almost not local motion on the two regions we selected. We focused on two regions, namely one of two is almost motionless and the other is in motion during the mastication. Moreover, the optical flow was employed to detect the movement of extracted features quantitatively. Based on the methods we used, the real-time and touchless masticatory frequency detection system chewing cycle counter system was realized.
