| (in English) | The number of wireless users such as cellular phone and wireless LAN has been increasing and the advent of smart phone and tablet terminal has resulted in the dramatic increase of traffic at the rate of 1.5 to 2 times per year. In addition, various new applications such as sensor networks and RFID are proposed and this trend will continue in future. The wide diversity of applications and rapid growth of wireless systems and services is bringing about a very serious problem, i.e. how to secure the frequency spectrum for the existing and new wireless systems and services. One of the promising approaches to solve this problem is “white space” and a great deal of efforts has been made on research and development, standardization and legislation for white space utilization. Especially, TV white space in UHF band is drawing a significant deal of attentions all over the world since it is well-suited to wireless mobile communications. However, as far as Japan is concerned, the applications of TV white space is limited to small area TV broadcasting using one-segment digital TV signals, and little proposals are made for its application to wireless communication systems and services contrary to the expectations. In order to understand the reasons behind this and promote the applications of white space to wireless communications, this presentation overviews dream and reality of the white space utilization and consider the issues to be solved for practical use of white space. | |
