6LoWPAN/RPL Relay Node Selection Scheme for Prolonging Lifetime in Wireless Sensor Network for Smart Metering
Masato Saito, Shiro Sakata (Chiba Univ.) NS2013-8
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, smart metering has been emerging as an essential function for the deployment of smart grid. Smart metering system is, generally, configured as a wireless sensor network (WSN) which consists of multiple smart meters equipped with wireless communication function. IP-compatible WSN has also been required considering interconnectivity with wide-area Internet. RPL(IPv6 Routing for Low power and Lossy Networks)is a promising protocol which was standardized over 6LoWPAN(IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Network)in IETF. Because smart meters are battery-powered in most cases, low power consumption is one of critical issues. A number of schemes of selecting relay-nodes from the root node to sensor nodes by broadcasting have been proposed. In these schemes, however, power consumption is concentrated on selected nodes as relay nodes. This causes the short network lifetime. This paper proposes a novel relay-node selection scheme enabling long network lifetime by improving existing schemes. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
