Spin-Transfer Torque RAM Cache Energy Reduction Using Zero-Data Flags

(in English) In this paper, we propose an energy reduction scheme for Spin-Transfer Torque RAM (STT-RAM) Caches. Introducing STT-RAM to large on-chip caches has been attracting attention because of its non-volatility. However, large energy requirement of STT-RAM on write operations, resulting in a huge amount of dynamic energy consumption, makes it difficult to leverage STT-RAM to on-chip cache designs. In order to reduce the energy consumption of the STT-RAM cache during write operations, the proposed design appends additional flags in cache tag arrays and sets these additional bits if the corresponding data in the cache line are zero. Our experimental results show that the proposed cache design can reduce 36.18% of total energy consumption in the STT-RAM cache at the byte-granular implementation, and 42.15% at the word granularity.
