Computational study on adaptive mechanism of motion perception in visual cortex

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Visual motion information is processed in the dorsal stream that begins with V1 and goes to MT/MST in the brain.
In the dorsal stream, although V1 neurons are selective only for spatio-temporal frequency,
MT neurons have a selectivity for speed and direction of visual motion.
Simoncelli, et al.(1988) proposed a hierarchical model that explains the motion detection from V1 to MT.
In this model, the motion detection in area MT is achieved by gathering the responses of V1 neurons with a static weight.
However, Hayashi, et al.(2010) showed the psychophysical properties of slit motion perception
and suggested that an adaptive weighting mechanism was necessary to interpret the results.
In this study we constructed a hierarchical model for the motion pathway that was equivalent to Simoncelli's
and carried out a simulation that was equivalent to Hayashi's psychological experiment.
The result showed that the motion detection property similar to the psychological experiment could not be obtained
only with the static weighting.
In addition, we proposed a model for dynamic weighting based on the frequency included in V1 responses
and investigated the motion detection property.
