(in English) We aim to develop a method for conveying 3D shapes to visually impaired persons by tactile means. In conventional point-contact-type force feedback devices, it has been difficult to tactilely explore edges and vertices, which are important in recognizing 3D shapes. To improve the recognition of edges and vertices, we have constructed a prototype device that can provide force feedback with three degrees of freedom to each of five points on a fingertip. Using this device, we performed a subjective assessment with the cooperation of four visually impaired persons on the ease of understanding an object's edges and vertices as a function of the number of force-feedback points. When compared with the conventional point-contact method, the assessment suggested that the ease of understanding edges and vertices improved significantly with two or more force-feedback points, and that could be most easily understood when using four force-feedback points under the conditions of this experiment.
