Effect of Powered mechanical leading method in the Tactile Presentation of Two-dimensional Information.

(in English) We propose a powered mechanical leading method to make it easier for visually impaired persons to rapidly understand two-dimensional information displayed on a tactile display. This force is mechanically induced on the user’s fingers before the user begins to tactilely explore content like illustrations and graphs in order to convey the overall configuration of the content, graphical plots, etc. We here report on a basic experiment that we performed to evaluate the effect of powered mechanical leading for various types of content and describe a presentation system and associated equipment that combines tactile presentation and force induction. In the experiment, the experimenter induced force on the subject’s fingers and the subject appraised the effect of the induced force on the accuracy and speed of comprehending content while feeling raised patterns presented on a tactile display. It was found that combining powered mechanical leading with tactile presentation was effective in promoting accurate and rapid comprehension of two-dimensional content.
