Adult Child's Information Fosters Communication by Older Adult
Nana Hamaguchi, Daisuke Asai, Yoko Asano (NTT) HCS2012-92
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Parents have difficulty in communicating with their adult children living apart. Much research has focused on this problem and solutions have been proposed that provide parents’ information to the children despite the parents’ desire to understand their children. To foster communication by the parent, we take the unique approach of providing the children’s information to the parent. As an initial experiment, we conduct a 15 day field study with three households to what information triggers a change in the parent’s communication behavior and attitude. The results show that the proposal raises the frequency of parent’s e-mails and expressions of companionship. A qualitative analysis find two effects on parent’s mind; personal information motivates mother to understand daughter, and daughter’s commitment alleviates the mother’s fear of one-way communication.
