Optical gas sensing based on leaky-guided structure change of cladding mode in single mode fiber by swelling polymer

(in English) In this technical report, an optical gas sensor, based on structural conversion between leaky and guided modes in single mode optical fibers (SMFs), is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This gas sensor consists of a piece of SMF coated with swelling polymer and wedged between two long period fiber gratings (LPFGs). The LPFGs are used not as sensor heads but as just mode converters to increase sensitivity by concentrating optical field near cladding surface. When swelling polymer around the SMF is touched with a specific molecule, the refractive index of the swelling polymer significantly decreases by swollen, resulting in the structural conversion from the leaky mode to the guided mode. A series of experimental demonstration was conducted for watery vapor using Hydroxyl Ethyl Cellulose as swelling polymer. The proposed watery vapor sensor showed significantly short response time of less than 0.1 second as well as high sensitivity of more than 9dB.
