An LQ-Less Implementation of Tomlinson Harashima Precoding (THP)

(in English) Dirty Paper Coding (DPC) is the best known interference cancellation strategy in wireless channels with additive interference, when side information about the latter is non-causally available to the transmitter. Extending the DPC interference cancellation approach to the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) case is challenging owing to the \textit{reciprocal} nature of cross-antenna interference. Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding (THP) is a DPC implementation in MIMO systems where the above challenge is mitigated through an LQ factorization of the channel matrix. Such matrix factorization transforms the channel gain matrix into a lower-triangular matrix, thereby taking away the reciprocal nature of the cross-antenna interference and making the interference pre-cancellable at the transmitter in a successive manner. Unfortunately, such factorization requires the knowledge of the whole channel matrix which has to be fed back from the transmitter. Such feedback signaling cost, together with the non-negligible computational cost of the LQ factorization, has prohibited THP from being applied in practice. In this work, a novel implementation of THP is presented where the LQ factorization procedure is removed. It is found that the proposed LQ-less THP implementation achieves the same performance of the conventional LQ-based THP implementation while only requiring half the CSI feedback signaling cost and two-thirds the computational complexity. The proposed implementation is of particular usefulness in deployments where the MIMO transmitter is equipped with a large number of antennas, such as the recent Massive MIMO.
