A Study of Electromagnetic Simulation for Fine Structures Based on Constrained Interpolation Profile (CIP) Method

(in English) In this report, we perform electromagnetic simulations with and without fine structures by using the constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, and discuss their accuracy and computational complexities. In general, in electromagnetic simulations based on the FDTD method, numerical solutions with sufficient accuracy can be obtained by setting grid spacing to 1/10 or less of the shortest wavelength of propagating waves. On the other hand, in the simulation based on the CIP method, because solutions are approximated using the cubic interpolation, of which the order of the approximation is higher than that of the FDTD method, the sufficient accuracy can be achieved by using about 1/3 of the shortest wavelength. We inevitably have to use extremely-small grid in the case that objects to be analyzed include fine structures, which are smaller than about 1/100 of the shortest wave length, and therefore, even the FDTD method can produce the accurate solutions. In contrast, under such circumstances, the CIP method tends to lose the benefit of the high accuracy of the cubic interpolation.
