Performance improvements using MRI anatomical normalization in statistical comparison of brain FDG-PET for dementia diagnosis

(in English) Statistical comparisons to detect significant decreases of glucose metabolism in brain images of positron emission tomography (PET) using [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) are frequently used for dementia diagnosis. However, the results of the statistical comparisons are often affected by the inconsistency of the anatomical normalization. In this study, we employed more accurate method for anatomical normalization with MRI, and compared the performance with that of the ordinary method using clinical images including healthy elderly subjects. Our proposed method markedly reduced false positive signals, and was detected hypoglucose-metabolic regions where could not be detected by the ordinary method. The findings suggested that our method has been improved the performance of the diagnosis.
