Empirical Study on Throughput of a Wireless Network using Multi-hop Communication

(in English) The throughput of radio communication depends on the attenuation between nodes. For the same distance
communication between a source and a destination, multi-hop communication has a shorter distance between
adjacent nodes and thus the low attenuation at each hop. Because of this, multi-hop communication may achieve higher throughput than single-hop communication. This paper evaluates the throughput of single-hop and multi-hop communication by some experiments. We build a multi-hop network with multiple laptops using 802.11b/g/n and Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR). We measure the throughput of the Transmission Control Protocol
(TCP) for different numbers of hops by the Netperf benchmark in a campus of Shizuoka University. As a result, we confirmed that in some cases multi-hop communication achieves higher throughput than single-hop communication.
