Aerial Handwritten Character Recognition using 2D Acceleration Information and 1D Pen Tilt Information

(in English) This paper presents an aerial handwritten character recognitionsystem, in which a three-dimensional accelerometer is used for sensing handwriting motions. Although the character is written in the air, it seems reasonable to be assumed that the pen-tip moves on some two-dimensional plane. However, it is difficult to recognize '0' and '6' by using only two-dimensional acceleration signal. To solve this problem, we utilize an acceleration signal toward the pen-tip direction as pen-tilt information. In our proposed method, handwritings are modeled by multi-stream HMMs, which have two streams of writing acceleration feature and pen-tilt acceleration feature. In experiments, correct recognition rate became at maximum when stream-weight was set to 0.5 in numeral character recognition, and 0.4 in hiragana character recognition. Furthermore, we have obtained a possibility that error reduction rate will be about 80%, if stream weight can be adjusted for each handwritten characters respectively.
