To achieve dynamic optical path networks for future energy-efficient transmission of a large bandwidth signal such as ultra high-definition video, we have proposed and demonstrated parametric tunable dispersion compensator (P-TDC). The P-TDC consists of a parametric frequency conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) process and a dispersive medium having frequency-dependent group velocity dispersion. The intrinsic advantages are wide operating bandwidth and fast tuning response, derived from the dispersion tuning technique based on FWM process, and such features are essentially required for truly dynamic dispersion compensation in the dynamic optical path networks. This paper proposes and demonstrates a seamless P-TDC to avoid dispersion tuning gap induced by the frequency conversion based on FWM process. The seamless P-TDC employs a widely tunable frequency conversion based on FWM process in a zero dispersion and dispersion slope polarization-maintaining highly-nonlinear fiber (ZD-DS PM-HNLF). Experimental demonstrations with 43-Gbit/s RZ-DQPSK signal show that the seamless P-TDC successfully operates for C-band input wavelengths. |
