High-speed and real-time digital signal processing technology enabled practical coherent optical communication systems by applying multilevel modulation such as quadrature phase shift keying. However the higher optical signal-to-noise ratio is required for multilevel modulation compared to conventional intensity modulation – direct detection or binary phase shift keying because of the decrease of Euclidean distance between adjacent symbols. Forward error correction (FEC) is one of promising ways to address this issue, and we have already proposed triple-concatenated FEC, which is the concatenation with a soft-decision based low-density parity-check code of an enhanced FEC comprising a concatenated pair of hard decision based block code.
In this paper, we report experimental demonstration of triple-concatenated FEC for 40 Gbps coherent optical communication systems. The triple-concatenated FEC achieves a Q-limit of 6.4 dB and a net coding gain of 10.8 dB at a post-FEC bit error ratio (BER) of 1E-15. In addition, we discuss the stability of the experimental system for long period of time measurement in the region at a post-FEC BER of 1E-15. |
