Automatic colorization of near-infrared monochrome face image based on pixel-wise classification and regression

(in English) This report presents a method that estimates a color face image from a monochrome face image taken under near-infrared illumination. The estimation is done by the regression between parameters obtained by CCA, where the regression coefficients are learned from color and infrared image pairs a priori. The most difficult problem is that the regressions depend on face organs. That is, the same intensity pixels in an infrared monochrome image do not correspond to the same color pixels in a color image. That is, globally uniform regression cannot colorize the pixels correctly. Especially, intensities of iris region in an infrared image are brighter than that in the corresponding monochrome image taken under visible ray illumination. In our method, we colorize a monochrome face image by regressions, where the coefficients are obtained in different image regions corresponding to facial parts. These regions are obtained by two-stage segmentation, which uses learned face template and adaptive segmentation. Comparative experiments between simple intensity based segmentation and our two-stage segmentation demonstrates the restoration accuracy of our method.
