Investigation of Polarization-Independent Low-Power Consumption Silicon Optical Switch using Wire-Waveguide Directional Coupler

(in English) Recently, information and communication traffics are intensively increasing, and it has being causing a serious problem of power consumption in routers and data centers. Silicon (Si) photonic devices have good affinity for Si LSI, and introduction of Si photonic devices for optical interconnection in Si LSIs is expected to lower the power consumption drastically. Here we take a directional coupler optical switch (DC-OS) as a valuable Si photonic device because of its simple structure. Conventional Si wire-waveguides have polarization dependence due to their rectangular cross sections, and even though it would be made in a square shape, there still remains a polarization dependent problem for a directional coupler. From such a reason, we investigated polarization independent operation of a silicon wire-waveguide directional coupler. In this study, it is aimed for the application to the 2x2 optical switch, and the fundamental switching characteristics with polarization independence will also be discussed.
