Spontaneous brain activity represents internal dynamics of a cortical neural network. Without sensory stimulation, cortical neurons give rise to highly irregular, asynchronous, and low-frequency firing activities. Despite many theoretical models proposed to elucidate the spontaneous activity, the most essential question of how the cortical noise is generated from the internal brain dynamics remained open. Recently, Teramae et al. (2012) proposed a neuronal network model with a log-normal distribution of the excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) and successfully clarified that the existence of a few but significantly strong EPSPs is the key factor for sustaining the irregular low-firing cortical activity. Up to now, the log-normal network model focused mainly on the first order statistics of the network connectivity. This paper introduces bidirectional couplings with correlated EPSPs to the log-normal network model. We show that the correlation gives rise to a group of neurons with significantly high firing frequency, which initiate synchronous firing activity of the cortical neurons. We utilized cross-correlogram (CCG) to characterize the synchronized firing activities. The neurons with high firing frequency are shown to be identified by the eigen-analysis of the connection matrix of the EPSP. |
