Stationarity Analysis and Prediction Model Construction of TCP Throughput by using Application-Level Mechanism
Hiroshi Yoshida, Kozo Satoda (NEC Corp.) IN2012-128
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The end-to-end TCP throughput on best-effort networks, e.g., the Internet and mobile networks, fluctuates widely depending on cross traffic and radio field strength. The throughput fluctuation spoils the quality of public cloud services. However, if the throughput variation is predictable with an application-level mechanism, the service providers can be proactive to deal with the problem of the quality deterioration. The authors have found that the TCP throughput fluctuation possesses two statuses, which are stationary status and non-stationary one, and then developed a method for characterizing them. This paper constructs a prediction model of TCP throughput that is a mixture of a stationary process model and a non-stationary one on the basis of the stationary characterization, and validates an accuracy of the model. Our experiment showed that the next 200 seconds of TCP throughput fluctuation through the networks from the Internet to three types of access networks (HSDPA/LTE/FTTH+Wi-Fi) was predicted with an average accuracy of 91.6 %.
