Impression that a speaker gives to a receiver plays an important role in human speech conversation. However, the mental status of the speaker or the intended impression does not always correspond to the impression that the receiver feels, and such discrepancy causes problems in communications. If a subjective measure of the impression of spoken
utterances is realized, it will be useful as a training aid system for communication skills. There are several studies of automatic impression recognition. However, they use a whole utterance as the recognition unit. On the other hand, human tends to judge impression just after hearing a beginning part. If the first a few words give depressed impression, that determines the receiver’s impression to the speaker. Therefore, evaluating impression using a short speech segment is important. In this study, we investigate impression recognition using various units as the input, such as beginning and ending of an utterance of a fixed length, a clause and a phrase. In the experiments, it is shown that relatively good performance is obtained using only a part of an utterance that is comparable to the one using a whole utterance. |
