A Study on Inter-ONU Communication Using Network Coding in Passive Optical Networks

(in English) Along with the popularization of broadband services, passive optical network (PON) systems have been deployed in many countries. In addition, due to the diversification of network services, the importance of inter-optical network unit (ONU) communication is recognized. For example, the inter-ONU communication is assumed to be utilized in next-generation mobile backhaul networks and local smart community networks. The application of network coding (NC) techniques to PON systems has been studied so far with a view to improving the downlink throughput in bidirectional inter-ONU communication. However, few studies on upstream bandwidth control in inter-ONU communication with the NC function have been performed. The authors have proposed upstream bandwidth control techniques, i.e. a grouped random scheduling (GRS) and a grouped priority scheduling (GPS) based on priority index (PI), for PON systems with the NC function. In this report, the comparison results of delay characteristics in a conventional random scheduling (RS) technique and the proposed bandwidth control techniques are shown, and a design methodology of the PI is also described.
