Analysis and comparison of large earthquakes by multifractal theory

(in English) Fractal analysis expresses self similarity of a pattern as a fractal dimension. In its extensive method, multifractal analysis, a pattern
is considered to consist of overlapping of several fractal dimension,
and they can analyze the nonuniformity of a pattern and the intensity
of fractal dimensions by generalized dimension. The hypocentral and
scale distributions of earthquakes are analyzed using the multifractal
method. Thus we can obtain the complexity quantitatively which has
weight on dense and sparse area of energy release with a quantity
called generalized dimension. Earthquakes occurred in Japan are compared
every several months. Moreover, by comparing before and after the past
large earthquakes, some features are discussed for each case.
