Recently, new technologies such as space division multiplexing, mode division multiplexing, and multi-level signal format are paid great attention which can overcome the limitation in transmission capacity. 2-mode fibers with large Aeff have possibilities to contribute to the enlargement of a transmission capacity by means of mode division multiplexing and multi-level signal format technologies. As for a single-core 2-mode fiber, we performed design optimization to simultaneously realize a large Aeff and low macro bending loss properties and successfully realized a single-core 2-mode fiber with low macro bending loss and large Aeff of 170 $\mu$m^2 (LP01 mode), and 250 $\mu$m^2 (LP11 mode). Moreover, to realize larger capacity transmission by combining a space division multiplexing technology, 7-core 2-mode fiber were designed and fabricated. The measured optical properties were confirmed to be as same as the simulated results. As a result, 7-core 2-mode fiber, which has large Aeff properties as same as single-core 2-mode fiber and sufficiently low cross-talks was successfully realized. |
