Observation of shear-orientational coupling under high shear rate
Taichi Hirano, Keiji Sakai (Inst. Indust. Sci.) US2012-65
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Molecular motion in a micro particle of fluid, in the radius of approximate 10~$\mu $m, is determined by the surface tension and the viscosity rather than the gravity and inertia. The characteristic time scale of the behavior of the fluid particle is in the order of a few micro seconds. We achieved the measurement of hyper rheology using a newly developed experimental system. The system can emit droplets with a controlled size and speed, and the head on collision of the microdroplets brings the united fluid into the very high shear rate up to $10^6\ \mathrm{s}^{-1}$. The direct observation of the motion of fluid under the high-shear pulse is expected to be an useful method for investigation of the rheological properties. In such a case of liquid crystals, the coupling between shear flow and molecular rotation plays an important role in determining the fluid properties. We observed the molecular orientation induced by the high-shear pulse, whose time scale is in the similar order of that of the orientational relaxation. The magnitude of the induced orientaional order is also theoretically estimated with the coupling viscosity and the experimental conditions.
