Effects of Code Block Size and Frequency Diversity on Block Error Rate for Coded OFDMA in Frequency-Selective Fading Channel

(in English) This paper presents the effects of the code block size and frequency diversity on the average block error rate (BLER) performance for coded orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in a frequency-selective fading channel. Computer simulation results show that a sufficient coding gain is obtained when the code block size is greater than approximately 3,000 or 4,500 bits for turbo code or rate-compatible / quasi-cyclic (RC/QC)-low-density parity-check (LDPC) code, respectively, for the rate R = 1/3. We confirm the validity of the frequency diversity effect, i.e., interleaving effect, in the frequency domain using the measure called the normalized frequency mean square covariance (NFMSV). We then show that the required average received signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) satisfying the target average BLER is decreased by further increasing the code block size, i.e., transmission bandwidth, due to the increasing frequency diversity effect for localized transmission. Moreover, we show that a distinct frequency diversity effect in terms of the required average received SNR is achieved by extending the transmission bandwidth up to approximately 4 or 9 MHz for the 6-path Typical Urban (TU) and ITU Vehicular-A (VA) channel models or 9-path Extended TU (ETU) and Extended VA (EVA) channel models, respectively.
