Investigation on Downlink/Uplink Throughput Performance in Heterogeneous Network Employing Cell Range Expansion for LTE-Advanced

(in English) In LTE-Advanced, heterogeneous networks are important to improve further the system throughput per unit area. In heterogeneous network deployment, low power nodes such as femtocells and picocells, which are connected to macrocells via relatively large-latency backhaul, are overlaid onto macrocells. Cell range expansion (CRE), which is a technique for expanding the cell radius of picocells by biasing the reference signal received power in the downlink, is applied to overcome the downlink - uplink imbalance and to obtain an offloading gain. This paper clarifies the impact of the CRE offset value on the user throughput performance in the downlink and uplink, since its effect is different on the links. Furthermore, this paper investigates a method for setting the optimum CRE offset value to maximize the cell-edge user throughput in the downlink and uplink. Simulation results show that when the CRE offset value is set between 8 to 16 dB, the cell-edge user throughput performance can be improved by allocating appropriate resources to protect UEs that connect to the picocells in the downlink. Then, we show that the cell-edge user throughput can be improved by setting the appropriate combination in the target received signal power between the macrocell and picocells according to the CRE offset value, which is decided based on the downlink cell-edge user throughput performance, in the uplink.
