A Study on Detection of Forest Damage by SAR and Optical Data. ○Daisuke Nose・Kazuo Ouchi(National Defense Academy) SANE2012-75 |

This paper examines a technique of extracting the typhoon damaged area of fallen trees in the Tomakomai national forest in Hokkaido, Japan by the data fusion using QuikBird multi-spectral optical and airborne Pi-SAR (Polarimetric-Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) L-band quad-polarization data, acquired after the typhoon No.18 (Songda) in September 8, 2004. According to the record, the area of damaged forests by this typhoon was more than 37,000 ha in the whole of Hokkaido. The QuikBird data were acquired in September 15, 2004, a week later the typhoon hit the forests; and the Pi-SAR data were acquired in November 3, 2004. As to the methodology, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied using 4 sets of visible and near-infra red (NIR) optical data, NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), and HH-, VV-, and HV-polarization Pi-SAR data. The first principal component was dominated by the brightness of optical data in the visible spectra, and the second principal component by the three polarization data with almost equal contributions. The most of the third principal component was NDVI and NIR. The last two parameters in the same component are because both NDVI and NIR are indices of chlorophyll. Among the eight principal components, the first three principal components contained approximately 90% of information. Maximum likelihood classification (MLC) with the first three components was then used to extract the typhoon damaged area, and compared with the ground-truth data. The results showed that the classification accuracy by PCA was approximately 74%, while those based on the 4 spectral optical data and Pi-SAR data were about 63% and 56% respectively, indicating the superiority of the PCA technique using the fused data over the approach based the individual optical and SAR data. |
