[Invited Talk] A Perspective on Spectrum Utilization for Future Wireless Networks

(in English) The number of wireless users such as cellular phone and wireless LAN has been dramatically increasing all over the world since public land mobile communications services were launched in 1979 in Japan. Furthermore, usage styles of wireless devices are diversified nowadays and are being changed from conventional telephone services to various types of information exchange via Internet. Typical examples are smart phone, tablet terminal and M2M communications, and this trend will be accelerated in future. To satisfy the increasing demands for wireless communications, various new wireless systems such as WRAN, WLAN, WPAN, WBAN, RFID and wireless sensor networks have been developed and will continue to be developed. In addition, rapid deployment of smart phone is causing the dramatic increase of cellular network traffic at the increasing rate of 1.5 to 2 times per year. This fact indicates that it is important to cope with the rapidly increasing traffic for the future of wireless networks. With the above-mentioned backgrounds, this invited talk describes the future of wireless networks and points out that we need to conduct research and development to make all of the appliances be wireless. To achieve this goal, it is important not only to improve the spectrum efficiency but also to secure the necessary frequency resources. Considering these situations, this talk discusses a perspective on spectrum utilization for future wireless networks, and describes the importance of frequency sharing and the exploration of higher frequency band.
