Polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) is an effective way to double a spectral efficiency in optical transmission systems. It has been shown that PDM systems can be described as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in combination with coherent detection. For PDM systems with MIMO processing, channel estimation is required to adequately perform MIMO processing at receivers. One of the channel estimation methods is periodically inserting a piece of known data, namely training symbol (TS) in data stream at transmitters. In this polarization demultiplexing method, the channel estimation error may increase when a state of polarization (SOP) change is large within a TS spacing. In this paper, we propose two fast polarization tracking methods. In addition, we have confirmed that the proposed methods can improve the tolerance for SOP changes compared to a conventional method through experiments. |
