Proposal of optical L2 switch network

(in English) Metro networks need to become more energy-saving and efficient to control traffic from access networks, which will become larger bandwidths and more energy saving per bit according to progressing the technology of WDM / TDM-PON. We propose an optical layer-2 switch network (OL2SW-NW) based on WDM/TDM rings to reduce drastically the power consumption by aggregating the buffer to the network edge and switching optical burst data without buffering /processing the header inside the network. The M-controller (M-C) in the OL2SW-NW collects the traffic volume between the core and access NWs and calculates the number of TSs according to the traffic volume. The edge entity of the network performs the burst transmission according to time slots, which is allocated by M-C. The WDM/TDM SW located inside OL2SW-NW can change the direction of data per TS unit without requiring buffers and processing header. We experimentally showed the feasibility of Add/Drop for any channel and any TSs by changing the wavelength in several nsec per TS.
