Study on Single-carrier MIMO Spatial Multiplexing/Diversity Switching Methods in a Multi-cell Environment

(in English) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) which uses multiple transmit and receive antennas can increase the maximum transmission rate by setting the spatial multiplexing order high, but the throughput degrades in a poor propagation environment due to low spatial diversity order. By adaptively changing the spatial multiplexing order according to changing propagation environment, the maximum throughput achievable in the present propagation environment can always be obtained. We have been studying single-carrier (SC)-MIMO adaptive multiplexing for the uplink access in a cellular network. In this paper, as the first step, we study a SC-MIMO multiplexing/diversity adaptive switching, which switches between the frequency-domain space division multiplexing (FD-SDM) with full spatial multiplexing order and the frequency-domain space-time block coded transmit diversity (FD-STTD) with full diversity order. The throughput performance achievable with SC-MIMO multiplexing/diversity adaptive switching in a multi-cell environment is evaluated by Monte Carlo numerical computation method.
