Spatial Resolution and Switching Field of Magnetic Force Microscope Tips Coated with L10 and L11 Ordered Magnetic Films

(in English) Magnetic force microscope (MFM) tips are prepared by coating Si tips of 4 nm radius with L10 ordered FePd and L11 ordered CoPt alloy films varying the thickness in a range between 20 and 80 nm. The effects of coated material, order degree, and coating thickness on the MFM spatial resolution as well as the switching field of MFM tip are investigated. The MFM resolution is influenced by the coated material and the coating thickness. As the coating thickness decreases from 80 to 20 nm, resolution is improved from 9.1 to 7.9 nm and from 9.1 to 7.5 nm for tips coated with FePd and CoPt films, respectively. The switching field of tip coated with 80-nm-thick FePd film increases from 0.25 to 1.50 kOe with increasing the order degree (S) of L10 from 0 to 0.52. The switching field is also influenced by the coating thickness. As the coating thickness increases from 20 to 80 nm, the switching field increases from 0.90 to 1.50 kOe and from 1.70 to 2.70 kOe for tips coated with FePd film of S = 0.52 and coated with CoPt film of S = 0.09, respectively. The present study has shown that it is possible to prepare an MFM tip with the resolution better than 10 nm and the switching field higher than 1.5 kOe by coating a sharp Si tip with L10 ordered FePd alloy or L11 ordered CoPt alloy film.
