Analyzing a New Mechanism of Air Holes to Suppress Micro-bending Loss in Large-mode-area Optical Fibers

(in English) We have reported a new type of optical fibers with a core formed by matured technology, namely the VAD method, and air-holes arranged in a circular pattern around the fiber edge, which do not affect its optical properties such as Aeff, macro-bending loss, and cutoff wavelength but reduce micro-bending loss. From this result, we have indicated that the air-holes have a novel functionality of absorbing micro-deformation from the outside, leading to the significant reduction of micro-bending loss. However, we have not yet fully understood the mechanism of the micro-bending loss reduction, whether the reduction is obtained by mechanical effect of air-holes or index difference between air and silica. Moreover, we have not yet investigated the micro-bending loss dependent on the air-hole diameter. In this paper, in order to study a functionality of air-holes placed around the fiber edge, we designed and fabricated the trench-index core fiber with Aeff of 140 $\mu m^{2}$ having air-holes acting as micro-bending loss reducer with macro-bending loss of 28 dB/m and micro-bending loss of 7.8 dB/km, which has a low micro-bending loss relative to the micro-bending loss value of SMF with the same Aeff of 140 $\mu m^{2}$.
