This study examined effects contour blur of an approaching object on time-to-contact (TTC) estimation. In Experiment 1, we measured estimated TTC of circular stimulus with and without blurred contour. Gaussian filter was used to change gradually the luminance around the contour and manipulated the degree of blur. The results showed that TTC estimation increased with increasing the degree of blur. This led us to hypothesize that perceptual velocity of approaching object decreases with increasing the degree of blur, resulting in larger estimation of TTC. In Experiment 2, we measured the perceptual velocity of blurred stimulus as the matched velocity of non-blurred stimulus and examined the effects of contour blur on perceptual velocity. The results showed that the perceptual velocity slowed down with increasing the degree of contour blur, supporting our hypothesis. |
