Feasibility Evaluation of a Bird Monitoring System

(in English) We developed a Bird Monitoring System for bird monitoring. This system consists of an IC tag, termed ”bird-tag”, mounted on each bird body, a set of geographically distributed base stations in a monitoring area, and a data center. The bird-tag is equipped with a CPU, a GPS receiver, a radio transceiver, etc. It is shown that GPS data can be sent as far as 7 km from a bird-tag to the base station. Bird-tag power saving is performed by stopping unnecessary GPS measurement. We developed a prototype of the bird-tag with the weight of 60 g including harness. The developed bird-tag was mounted on a live bird. It is confirmed that the bird-tag apparently does not harm bird behavior. GPS data measured by the bird-tag is correctly received by a portable base station set up at the near-by place. Battery life of the bird-tag is 31 hours for continuous GPS measurement and transmission and 18 days even for no measurement and further power saving is mandatory for practical use .
