[Invited Talk] Recent Progress of Advanced Multilevel Optical Modulator with Silica-LiNbO3 Hybrid Configuration

(in English) Advanced spectrally efficient multilevel modulation formats, such as N-level quadrature amplitude modulation (N-QAM) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), are essential for future large-capacity optical transmission systems. Integrated optical modulators that synthesize multilevel signals in the optical domain are promising for achieving >100-Gb/s-class high-SE optical transmission systems because they operate at high baud rates with low optical losses. We have developed technologies for hybrid integration of silica planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) and an LiNbO3 (LN) phase-modulator array, with which we can combine the merits of both material platforms: low optical loss, high reliability, and high design flexibility of silica PLCs and large electro-optic bandwidth of LN phase modulators. In this presentation, the basic concept of the silica-LN hybrid integration will be discussed, followed by a reveiw of our recent achievements including flexible-format modulators and a dual-carrier modulator.
