Comprehensive Understanding of Self-Oragnizing Map and Generative Topographic Mapping

(in English) The purpose of this paper is to find out the comprehensive understanding
of the representative topographic mappings, i.e., the Self-Organizing
Map (SOM) and the Generative Topographic Mapping (GTM). In this paper,
we rexamined the mean field approximation, and obtained a better
approximation by considering the dependency between the map and each
latent variable locally. To describe the improved approximation, we also
introduced the `competitive factor $\kappa$'. Our result shows that our
better approximation corresponds to $\kappa^{-1}=0.5$, whereas
$\kappa^{-1}=0$ and $\kappa^{-1}=1$ in the cases of SOM and GTM
respectively. It means that the algorithm of SOM and GTM are described
by the difference of the comptititive factor $\kappa$, the best value of
which is just in the middle of SOM and GTM.
