Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Saccades are initiated by phasic pulse-like neuronal activities of brainstem burst neurons. The phasic activities alone cannot maintain the eye position updated after each saccade, resulting in drifting back to the pre-saccadic eye position. Therefore sustained neuronal activities have to be added to the phasic activities to hold the eye position after each saccade. The oculomotor integrator (NI) has been postulated to produce the sustained step-like signal by integrating the pulse-like phasic signal. In goldfish, neurons carrying the signal that is seemingly the output of NI have been identified in Area I. However, it is not yet known how many NIs exist to control two eyes each of which consists of at least two hemi-fields, namely nasal and temporal. Here we employed a novel visual feedback stimulus to test monocularity and eye position dependency of NI. We demonstrate that there are at least 2 NIs each of which is responsible for maintaining temporal eye positions in one eye and nasal positions in the other eye.
