Emergence of even-symmetric response property of complex cell by hierarchical Bayesian model

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) can be classified into two types: simple- and complex-cells. Many statistical models, such as sparse coding, have provided descriptions of how simple-cells develop their receptive fields (RFs) and form topographic maps. There are also models of how complex-cells acquire phase-invariant response properties by using statistical structures of natural images. However, these models depend on a strong assumption that complex-cells receive even-symmetric signals such as responses of simple-cells with RFs of opposite phases.
Here we constructed a two-layer Bayesian model of the early visual cortex and investigated the model properties to provide an explanation of how the visual system acquires the even-symmetric response property found in complex cells.
