Neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) can be classified into two types: simple- and complex-cells. Many statistical models, such as sparse coding, have provided descriptions of how simple-cells develop their receptive fields (RFs) and form topographic maps. There are also models of how complex-cells acquire phase-invariant response properties by using statistical structures of natural images. However, these models depend on a strong assumption that complex-cells receive even-symmetric signals such as responses of simple-cells with RFs of opposite phases.
Here we constructed a two-layer Bayesian model of the early visual cortex and investigated the model properties to provide an explanation of how the visual system acquires the even-symmetric response property found in complex cells. |
