Structures of Surround Modulation eliciting Direction of Figure Selectivity -- Mathematical Analysis by SVM --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The determination of Border-Ownership along contour is a crucial step toward figure-ground segregation. Recent physiological and computational studies have reported that the cells in V2/V4 are selective to BO, and that surround modulation underlies the selectivity. Accurate determination of BO along complex contours in natural images appears difficult for a single BO-selective cell, leading to the idea that multiple cells work simultaneously for BO perception. Here, we studied computationally with Support Vector Machine how many BO cells and what characteristics of the cells are required to determine BO accurately in natural images. The results indicate that only about twenty BO cells are required to achieve 85% correct. The results suggest that a small number of BO-selective cells are capable of determining BO in natural images as similar to human perception.
