Influence of cell parameters on gradation display properties in multidomain liquid crystal device

(in English) An area coverage modulation have been studied in multidomain liquid crystal (LC) cell. LC director distributions in homogeneous and 90 degree twisted nematic (TN) aligned lines which show black and white lines between closed polarizers are numerically estimated. The transmittance in one pixel with TN and homogeneous lines is calculated in different conditions of cell thickness, refractive index anisotropy, line width, and the elastic constants of liquid crystal. The TN area coverage almost corresponds to tone density since the transmittance in TN lines gets close to 100% when the twist elastic constant is small.
