Development of methanol sensor for direct methanol fuel cells using a shear horizontal surface acoustic wave

(in English) Concentration of methanol (MeOH) solution is measured using a shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) sensor. The SH-SAW sensor can detect both viscosity and dielectric constant. When 36YX-LiTaO3 is used, a high sensitive MeOH sensor for detecting the dielectric constant is realized. We have been developing the MeOH sensor for a direct methanol fuel cell. Bubbles are generated at high temperature and the sensor responses are influenced. The influence of bubbles is discussed on the basis of experiment and numerical calculation. Both results indicate that phase shift due to the bubble on the free surface is larger than on the metalized surface. Then the long time stability at different temperature is measured. Increasing the temperature, sensor responses vary widely due to bubbles. However, fluctuations are reduced using the pump. A formic acid is generated during an electrode reaction. To reduce the influence of the formic acid, sensor sensitivities are calculated and found that high frequency SH-SAW sensor must be used.
