A study on the relationship between time scale of rain attenuation and velocity of rain area motion in Ka- and Ku-band satellite communications links

(in English) Characteristics of time scales of Ku- and Ka-band rain attenuation fluctuations were investigated for various kinds of rainfall types and rain fronts in each rainfall event, using a correlation time of the radio wave signal levels continuously received from Ku- and Ka-band satellites at Osaka Electro-Communication University (OECU; Neyagawa, Osaka) during 1986-2006. Compared with rain area motions obtained from simultaneous rain attenuation measurements conducted among OECU, Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH; Uji, Kyoto) and MU radar (MU; Koga, Shiga) of Kyoto University, the time scales of rain attenuation are shown to become smaller as the speed of rain area motions increases. As for rain types, the correlation times are relatively longer in the case of warm fronts than cold fronts associated with cyclones (low pressures) in the Temperate Zone. Also, the occluded fronts show intermediate correlation times. On the other hand, the correlation times are comparatively longer on the north side of stationary fronts than the south side of stationary fronts. When the stationary fronts pass over the earth station, the correlation times become values between those of the north and south sides.
