[Panel Discussion] Challenges and Opportunities for Normally-Off Computing

(in English) Computer systems are utilized almost everywhere in the world and further contribution of these systems to our society is expected. To satisfy this expectation, it is indispensable to reduce power consumption of computer systems. “Normally-Off” is believed as one of the most promising ways to achieve this goal, which aggressively powers off components of computer systems when they need not to operate. This idea is based on the observation that all the components need not work all the time during computation. Its effectiveness, however, has been limited because volatile memories such as SRAM, and DRAM lose data when power is turned off. Their data should be saved into disks or flash memory or their power should be kept on. New memory devices, called Non-Volatile Memory (NVM), including MRAM, FeRAM, PRAM have appeared recently and high attention has been paid to Normally-Off Computing using these NVMs. In this panel, world leading engineers and researchers in both fields of integration circuit design and computer architecture are invited, and its expectation and challenges to be solved are addressed.
