Comparison of User Throughput between Orthogonal Access and Non-orthogonal Access with SIC in MIMO Cellular Downlink

(in English) This paper compares average and cell-edge user throughput between orthogonal access and non-orthogonal access with successive interference canceller (SIC) in MIMO cellular downlink. Since both the average and cell-edge user throughput are important in the real system, we compare the cell-edge user throughput assuming the same average user throughput. We apply fractional transmit power control (TPC) which is widely used in LTE cellular uplink to control the transmit power allocation to respective users. Transmit covariance matrices (thus the precoding matrices) are given by sequential water-filling method. From the simulation results, we demonstrate that the non-orthogonal access with SIC can significantly enhance the cell-edge throughput compared to orthogonal access while achieving approximately the same average user throughput.
