Realizing Fair Sharing of WLAN Channels in the Presence of Legacy Devices

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) IEEE 802.11n is being widely deployed since its finalization. But legacy WLAN devices running 802.11g or even 802.11b will co-exist for a long time and share the same 2.4GHz ISM band. Although 802.11n is designed to be backward compatible with 802.11b/g, there are few evaluation results. In addition, frame aggregation, used by 802.11n devices to reduce protocol overhead, may affect channel usage of legacy devices. In this paper, we study the coexistence of 802.11g/n devices, and aim to realize fair sharing of channels. We study two aspects: (i) Intra-cell channel access control. Contention window of 802.11n devices is adjusted based on frame aggregation size so that each node gets a fair share of the channel in terms of air-time. (ii) Association control. Nodes are properly assigned to APs running on different channels to ensure fair share of channels across cells. As a result, each node gets the same air-time ratio, during which a new node achieves higher throughput while a legacy node will not be starved. Theoretical analysis and simulation results confirm that the proposed method realizes proportional fair scheduling.
